Kaukau sticks are designed and manufactured in Hilo, Hawaii. These Guns are built to last. Kaukau sticks boast triple laminated sapele stocks while utilizing high quality Neptonics components. The cuttle fish body reduces overall mass except where you need it. The track in these guns are very deep which offer the support required for shooting but easy of loading as well. You can expect to shoot your kaukau stick for the rest of your life!!

The spirit of Kaukau
The ”spirit of kaukau” is something central to the design and manufacture of these guns. Gathering food from the ocean and mountains is a common occurrence for many island people. These guns were built with the spirit of the hunt in mind. For years, Sam Halsted (designer and builder) built his own guns, most of which were rectangular stocks with the sole purpose of killing fish. Most were not pretty but very functional.
With the onset of covid Sam found he had a lot of time on his hands. During that period the creative juices started to flow and the first prototypes were built. The final design offers a deep open track which allows for maximum shaft support and ease of loading not offered by enclosed tracks. The stock is laminated Sapele which is known for its rot resistance, perfect specific density and toughness. There are deep rubber grooves allowing for a clear sight picture when lining up shots. Finally, the up front rubber hole holds the bands firmly for a “no worry” state of mind when retrieving fish. Our guns are neutrally to slightly negatively buoyant when loaded, but will float after being shot. If you have ever used a gun that sinks while retrieving a fish you know how important this is!
